Who sampled?

Have you ever heard a song and realized that it sounds like something else? Imagine my fascination yesterday when I heard a song on the radio and recognized Eiffel 65 playing in the background. Now I don't make it a habit of listening to pop radio stations and I definitely don't make it a habit of knowing Eiffel 65 songs. But I was a teenager once so I remember "I'm Blue" and I wasn't in my typical urban sprawl neighborhood and had to listen to a car radio.

Now that the scene it set, I bring you to listen to Flo Rida and his song "Sugar." With one website, I was able to confirm my radio finding. The link will bring you to "Who Sampled;" their tagline being "exploring and discussing the DNA of music." They had me at DNA.

I decided that I had to share this website because after you view it, you too will spend time exploring it's cavern of knowledge. My favorite is the Mint Royale video sampling from Gene Kelly's "Singin' in the Rain" (see below or here). It's curious to look at both sides from the samplers and the samplees. This truly is the DNA of music. To keep my radio story going, 6 out of 8 of the next songs the station played had sampled from music I already knew. I commend anyone who can take a great song and keep making it interesting. Key word: interesting. I'm still on the fence about "Sugar;" in my opinion Eiffel 65 should be kept in the 90s.

moe.

Genre: Country-inspired Prog Rock

moe. is a legendary name in jam-heavy, well scripted live rock performances. While bands like Phish tend to improvise large portions of their show, moe. finds a balance closer to lengthy pre-planned arrangements similar to the heyday of the Grateful Dead. The five-member troupe has a unique ability to hold their collective energy at the peak of a jam for five, ten, even twenty minutes during an extended piece, challenging the crowd to keep pace (see video 2 below). They'll be in Boston this weekend, followed by a west coast run a bit later this year. They're absolutely worth seeing live. Check out the videos below, or download any of their live show for free on archive.org.
